Sharks Wrap Up 2018-19 Season with Championships!

The Sharks wrapped up their season last weekend with 10U, 12U, 15U, and 18U Shark teams competing in an unprecedented five Polar Hurricane League Tournament Championship games in Wake Forest on Sunday.

The first puck drop of the day came in the 10U Advanced Division, which pitted the Leopard Sharks, who came into the title game with a perfect 20-0-0 league record, against the #3 seeded Cary Frostbite.  The game went according to script, as the Leopard Sharks jumped out to an early lead and put the clamps down on defense on their way to a 4-0 win, capping an impressive undefeated, untied season.

Next up on the “Championship Sunday” schedule was the 12U Advanced Division title game, where the two regular season co-champions found themselves facing off in a final “rubber match” of the season.   The hometown Bull Sharks came out on fire and found the back of the net three times to take a 3-1 lead over the Wake Forest Raiders at the end of the first period.  Like their 10U counterparts, the Bull Sharks locked things down on defense in route to a 5-1 championship victory.  The Bull Sharks finished their season with a 17-3-1 record.

The 15U Advanced Division championship game would prove to be a much more competitive contest.  The Gray Sharks, who won the regular season title, jumped out to an early 1-0 lead, but by the end of the second period found themselves down 3-1 to the #2 seeded Garner DustyBenders.  The Gray Sharks battled their way back to a 3-3 draw by the end of regulation to force overtime, but couldn’t prevent Garner from notching the decisive sudden death goal in the extra session.  The Gray Sharks ended their season with a 12-4-5 record to go along with their tournament silver medals.

The 15U Intermediate Division championship was almost a carbon copy of the 15U Advanced game.  The Blue Sharks, who were also regular season champions and the top seed, faced off against the #2 seed Wake Forest Mustangs.  Like their 15U Gray Shark practice mates, the Blue Sharks came out slow and found themselves in a 3-1 hole after two periods.  However, like the Gray Sharks (again), the Blue Sharks fought back and managed to tie the game at 3-3 late in the third period to force overtime.   With neither team able to get the puck across the goal line in the extra session, the game, and the championship, would be decided with a shootout.  Lady luck would not be with the Sharks, as both their fourth and fifth shot attempts would hit the goal post, sending the Mustangs to the podium as the gold medalists.  The Blue Sharks ended their season with a 12-6-3 ledger.

The final contest of the day paired up the 18U Sharks against their rivals, the Garner Crunch.  In a day of great hockey action, this would end up being the third game in a row to go into overtime, and the second championship to be decided by a shootout.  Hillsborough was able to buck the trend set in the two 15U games and come out on top in the shootout and bring the 18U banner back to Hillsborough.  The Shark High Schoolers finished up their year with a 12-6-3 record.

Of the seven divisions in the PHHL organization, which include teams from Raleigh, Wake Forest, Garner, Cary, and Hillsborough, the Sharks captured four regular season titles, participated in five tournament championship games, and captured three tournament titles.

Also representing Hillsborough in the tournament were the Tiger Sharks (10U) and the Mako Sharks (12U), who fought hard and represented western triangle hockey very well before being eliminated in the preliminary rounds.

The Hillsborough 8U Mites finished their season up last weekend as well, participating in the Winston-Salem Mites Jamboree event.  The 8U mites alone had over 40 girls and boys on their roster this season, which bodes very well for the future of Sharks hockey.

Congrats to all the Sharks teams on a great season!
