The Hillsborough Sharks Hockey Club finished up their season last weekend with the 10U, 12U, 14U, and 18U teams competing in the Polar Hurricanes League tournament in Wake County, and the 8U teams playing in the Mite Jamboree at the Orange County Sportsplex.
In 10U tournament action, the Leopard Sharks took second place, losing 6-5 on a last second goal to the Lady Jr. Hurricanes in the championship game. The Leopard Sharks finished up their season with an impressive 17-3-1 record. Their sister team, the Tiger Sharks, won the regular season championship with an undefeated 18-0-1 record, but were upset by the same Jr. Hurricanes team in the semi-finals.
The 12U Intermediate division title game was another thriller, and another heartbreaker for Hillsborough. The Mako Sharks traded goals with the Garner Spartans in the in final minute of regulation to tie the score at 3 all, but the Spartans prevailed with a sudden death goal three minutes into overtime.
The Sharks turned the tables in the 12U Advanced division championship game, where the Bull Sharks fought back from an early two goal deficit against the Cary Stealth to tie the game at 4-4 and force yet another overtime showdown. The Bull Sharks avoided going to a shootout when they scored the title winner with just 17 seconds left in the extra period. The Bull Sharks also took home silver medals in the Hemby Cup tournament in Charlotte in February.
Also representing Hillsborough in the tournament were the Hammerhead Sharks (12U, 4th place), the Gray Sharks (14U, 5th place), the Blue Sharks (14U, 4th place), and the 18U Sharks (4th place).
